Rising Food Prices: How Consumers Are Coping
Writer: Sums Selvarajan
The cost of food has once more become the consumer’s biggest worry. The World Bank’s food price index indicates an increase of 15% between October 2010 and January 2011 - only 3% below its peak in 2008 - resulting from the sharp increase of global prices of staples such as cereals, wheat, maize, sugar and edible oils.
Food Future: Sustainable Packaging
Writer: Sums Selvarajan
Consumer wallet voting has never been more apparent as consumers signal their willingness to pay a premium to protect the environment. Increasing urbanisation has led us to place an importance on the packaging of food as much as our food. The United Nations estimates that the world’s population will grow to 9 billion by 2050 with most people living in cities and urban areas. According to the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, "efficient and productive industry engaged in truly sustainable practice is essential to meet the incredible increase in demand for goods and resources that this growth implies".
Food Security
Writer: Sums Selvarajan
Food security is built on the availability, access and appropriate use of food and is defined as existing "when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life" (World Food Summit, 1996). However, ever rising food costs threatens to push the world into another major food crisis. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the global price for a box of basic foods is still 37% higher than it was in June of last year. With the World Bank estimating that around 1.2 billion people are living below the poverty line of US$1.25 a day, the increase in global food prices could drive an estimated 10 million people below the extreme poverty line.
